Assignment 1: Encountering Cultures- Initial Ideas

For this assignment I have to create 10 photographic pieces, this may be 10 images, 10 pairs of images or a montage.

“are you in harmony or in conflict within the social structure that you are a part of”

I think the main words in this quote is ‘conflict’ and ‘harmony’ and how whatever subject i chose to photograph reflects these.

Here are the ideas that I initially had towards this brief….

Reflections:

  • Things are seen differently/ more faintly to what they really are
  • A window into someone else’s views

Opposites:

  • Pairs of images
  • Positive and negative
  • Right and wrong
  • Strong and weak
  • Childhood and adulthood
  • Student and local
  • Dreams and reality
  • Stereotypes- e.g. male and female
  • What we grew up believe and what we believe now

Self image:

  • Self portraits
  • Models and feelings
  • Comparisons on moods
  • How you SHOULD feel
  • Being judged
  • Not always using the image the subject would choose to portray themselves
  • Establishing identity
  • Uniforms, dress code, fashion, emotions

Conformity:

  • Images of everyone doing the same- cracking out of conformity
  • Paired with something different
  • Odd one out?
  • Same person with different groups- do they still fit in?

Image out of context:

  • An image that should be viewed in a certain way taken out of context
  • Record feedback and reactions- display this with the images (peers, tutors, other viewers, online from blog)- see how they interpret it.
  • Strip away the surroundings?
  • Take close up images of details of one place and super impose them onto another- maybe fargo village
  • Link with environments, different environments merged together
  • Same place, details you wouldn’t necessarily notice brought more to the foreground

Multiple exposures:

  • Overlaying images to form a direct comparison
  • Gives the viewer more than one thing to look at at once
  • Ghostlike

Techniques:

  • Long exposures
  • Film
  • Digital
  • Photoshop
  • Double exposures

Environments:

  • Different environments and how it changes the way people are in them
  • Urban, countryside, beaches, towns, cities, rural

Flash Gun:

  • Achieving natural images
  • Get a flash gun and set it off before the image has been taken so the subject relaxes as they think its already been taken- captures their true self
